Cruz announced a new campaign Tuesday, telling supporters he’s in the process of “reopening” his Senate office and “restoring our credibility” in Washington.
The Texas Republican said his first priority in 2020 is to “bring back the power of the Senate.”
“We need to be heard in Washington,” Cruz told the crowd in Houston.
“The Senate needs to be the voice of the American people, not the voice and the seal of approval of special interests,” Cruz said.
“We have to be able to deliver results, not just on the House and the Senate floor, but the Oval Office, in every other way.”
Cruz is expected to run in 2020, a time when President Donald Trump is likely to run for reelection in 2018.
Cruz’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The House of Representatives approved a measure on Monday that would make it a felony to intentionally misappropriate or misuse funds for political purposes.
In a statement, the Trump administration slammed the legislation as a “lame excuse for an unfair and irresponsible spending spree.”
The legislation, which was introduced by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), would apply to anyone who “fails to report their activities or contributions to federal, state, local, tribal, or local government, or to the IRS as required by law.”
“While Congressmen have been trying to repeal and replace Obamacare, they have not been able to accomplish their goal of reducing health care costs for the American taxpayer,” Trump said in a statement.
“I’m proud to announce that the House of Representative will soon pass the Congressional Health Care Reform Act.”
Chaffetz and his colleagues on the Appropriations Committee, led by Rep .
Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R) of Washington, have been working on the measure for several months.
In the House, the measure passed unanimously in January and passed in both chambers by a vote of 242-183.
“It’s a big day for our country,” McMorres Rodgers said on Monday.
“Today we pass legislation that protects people with pre-existing conditions, expands access to care and provides millions of people with affordable access to quality health care.”
McMorri-Rodgers, who is also the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee’s Committee on Education and the Workforce, has introduced the measure to overhaul the nation’s health care system.
